Camera

Record your screen and webcam at the same time, then style your face afterwards: a bubble, side by side or camera only, with your room blurred if you like.

Where in the app Editor → Camera tab Cmd4 Pick a camera in the Capture Bar OptionShift5

Record your screen and webcam at the same time #

ScreenCameo can record your screen and webcam at the same time on your Mac. It saves the camera separately, so you choose its shape, size and layout later in the editor.

  1. Open the Capture Bar with OptionShift5.
  2. Click the camera button and pick your camera. No camera turns it off.
  3. Allow camera access when macOS asks. The permissions guide explains each one.
  4. Start recording as usual. The recording guide covers the rest of the Capture Bar.

While you set up and record, a round bubble shows your camera on screen.

ToDo this
Move itDrag the bubble anywhere on the screen.
Resize itPoint at it and click − or +, or scroll over it. It goes from 110 to 360 points wide.

Style your camera bubble #

The Camera tab controls how your face appears in the finished video. Press Esc so nothing is selected, then click Camera in the toolbar, or press Cmd4.

SettingWhat it does
Show cameraTurns the camera on or off for the whole video. The small bubble beside it shows how it looks now.
ShapeCircle or Rounded, under Bubble.
SizeThe bubble’s height as a share of the video’s height: 12% to 45%. New recordings use 24%.
PositionClick one of the four corners on the small picture of your video. New recordings start in the corner where the bubble was.
Move out of the cursor’s waySlides the bubble to the other side when you work under it. On by default.

Place the bubble anywhere #

  1. Drag the bubble on the small picture under Position, or click any spot there. You can also pause and drag the bubble on the video itself.
  2. Let go near a corner and it snaps into that corner.
  3. To put it back, click Back to corner, click a corner, or double-click the bubble on the video.

Pick a layout for the whole video #

A layout decides how much of the video your camera takes up. Pick one under Layout → Whole video.

LayoutWhat it showsBest for
BubbleYour camera in a small bubble over the screen.Tutorials and product demos
Side by sideYour screen and your camera next to each other.Talks and walkthroughs where your face matters
Camera onlyOnly your camera, full size.An intro or an outro
HiddenNo camera.Parts where your face would distract

Bubble and Hidden do the same as turning Show camera on or off. Side by side and Camera only add one block across the whole Camera lane.

Change the layout for a moment #

Switch layouts at certain moments, for example camera only for your intro, then a bubble for the demo.

  1. Move the playhead to where the layout should change.
  2. Under Layout → Add at (it shows the playhead’s time), click Bubble, Side by side, Camera only or Hidden. A 4-second block appears on the Camera lane. Inside an existing change, it splits that change: the rest keeps its layout.
  3. Drag the block’s edges to set when it starts and ends. Drag its middle to move it. Layouts animate in and out.
  4. Click a block to pick a different layout, or press Delete to remove it.

Hover a tile under Add at to see which layout shows at the playhead now. The editing guide explains the lanes.

Frame your face #

Framing crops the camera picture. It applies in every layout, not just the bubble.

SettingWhat it does
ZoomCrops in on your face, from 1× (the whole picture) to 3×.
Keep in the middleThe bright part of the small picture is what the bubble shows. Drag it to choose what stays in the middle. Centre puts it back.
MirrorFlips the picture, like looking in a mirror. On by default.

Blur or replace what’s behind you #

Hide a messy room without a green screen. ScreenCameo finds you in the picture with person detection, on your Mac.

  1. Open Behind you in the Camera tab.
  2. Pick Original (your room as recorded), Blur or Studio (a clean studio backdrop).
  3. With Blur, drag Background blur strength. Only what’s behind you is blurred; you stay sharp.

Shrink the camera during zooms #

Your camera gets smaller while the screen is zoomed in, so it covers less of what you show. The last row of the Camera tab, Camera during zooms, opens the setting in the Motion tab.

  1. Turn Shrink while zoomed in on or off. It’s on for new recordings.
  2. Drag Size when zoomed to set how small it gets: 30% to 100% of its normal size. The default is 65%.

The zoom guide covers the other settings for how zooms move.

Add your camera when the recording has none #

Recorded without a camera? The Camera tab says This recording has no camera. Click Open the Capture Bar to pick a camera for next time.

To add your face to this video now, click Record Yourself Over This Video…. The presenter guide shows how to record yourself while the edited video plays.
