Install & update
Install ScreenCameo on Mac in a minute, keep it up to date, and reinstall or remove it without losing your recordings.
To install ScreenCameo on Mac, you download one disk image and drag the app into Applications. It takes about a minute. After that, ScreenCameo checks for updates by itself once a day.
Install ScreenCameo on your Mac #
- Go to the download page and click Download ScreenCameo.
- Open your Downloads folder and double-click the ScreenCameo disk image.
- In the window that opens, drag ScreenCameo onto the Applications folder.
- Eject the disk image. You can then move the downloaded file to the Trash.
- Open ScreenCameo from Applications, Launchpad or Spotlight.
Open it for the first time #
ScreenCameo is signed and notarized by Apple. The first time you open it, macOS may ask if you’re sure, because it came from the internet. Click Open.
A welcome window then walks you through activating your license and allowing Screen Recording. Getting started covers each step, and Permissions explains what each permission is for.
ScreenCameo lives in your menu bar, so you won’t see it in the Dock unless a window is open. Look for the small ring icon at the top right of your screen.
Update ScreenCameo #
ScreenCameo checks for a new version once a day while it runs. When one is ready, a window shows what changed and offers to install it. Install it, and ScreenCameo relaunches on the new version.
To check right now, use any of these:
| Where | What to click |
|---|---|
| The ScreenCameo menu, when a ScreenCameo window is in front | Check for Updates… |
| The menu-bar icon’s menu | Check for Updates… |
| Settings (CmdComma) → General → Updates | Check for Updates…. Version shows the version you have. |
After an update, a What’s new in ScreenCameo window lists the highlights once. Click Continue to close it, or Try it in the demo to try them. You can open it again from Help → What’s New. Every release is also listed in the changelog.
Open ScreenCameo at login #
With Open at login on, ScreenCameo starts quietly in the menu bar when you log in. Your recording shortcuts, like OptionShift5, then work straight away.
- Press CmdComma to open Settings, then click General.
- Turn Open at login on or off.
Reinstall ScreenCameo #
Reinstalling replaces the app and keeps everything else. Your recordings, screenshots, settings and license stay as they are.
- Quit ScreenCameo completely: click the menu-bar icon, then Quit ScreenCameo.
- Download it again from the download page.
- Drag ScreenCameo to Applications, then click Replace when Finder asks.
- Open it. You don’t need to enter your license key again on the same Mac.
Uninstall ScreenCameo #
- If Open at login is on, turn it off in Settings → General.
- Click the menu-bar icon, then Quit ScreenCameo.
- In Finder, open Applications and drag ScreenCameo to the Trash.
Removing the app doesn’t touch your files. These stay on your Mac until you delete them yourself:
| Folder | What’s in it |
|---|---|
~/Movies/ScreenCameo | Your recordings, and their exports in Exports. It’s somewhere else if you changed the Recordings folder. |
~/Library/Application Support/ScreenCameo | Your screenshot history (Screenshots) and the copy of your brand logo (Brand). |
If something’s off#
- Check for Updates… says I’m up to date, but the changelog has a newer version
- That version came out after your updates ended. Check Updates included until in Settings → License, then renew your updates.
- The update doesn’t install
- Make sure ScreenCameo is in your Applications folder, not running from the disk image. Then click Check for Updates… again.
- The app is still running after I pressed CmdQ
- That’s on purpose: it stays in the menu bar. Choose Quit ScreenCameo in the menu-bar icon’s menu, or turn off Keep in the menu bar after CmdQ in Settings → General.
