Text & title cards
Add titles and text to a screen recording: a headline, a lower third with your name, a small callout or a full-screen title card.
Titles and text in a screen recording #
You can add titles and text to a screen recording right in the editor. Each piece of text is a block on the Text lane, so it shows for as long as you like. Text works on every clip, including videos you import.
| Kind | What it is |
|---|---|
| Title | A headline near the top, with no background. |
| Lower third | A name and a role near the bottom left, on a colored fill. |
| Callout | A short label on a colored fill, such as “New”. |
| Title card | A full-screen card that covers the video, for a chapter or a closing line. |
Add text #
- Move the playhead to where the text should appear.
- Press T, click Text in the timeline toolbar, or double-click an empty spot on the Text lane.
- A title appears on the preview and a block on the Text lane. It lasts 3 s, or 2.5 s for a title card.
Write and style it #
- Type your words in the box at the top of the inspector. A second line becomes a smaller subtitle.
- Under Style, click Title, Lower third, Callout or Title card. Each kind starts with its own position, size and color.
- Drag Size, or type a number. Size is shown in points (pt), as the text will measure in the exported video.
- Under Font, choose Default, Rounded, Serif, Mono or Condensed.
- Click a swatch under Color (for a title) or Fill (for the others). The color well at the end picks any color.
- Under Animation, choose Fade, Rise, Pop or None. New text uses Rise; title cards use Fade.
- Under Position, click one of the nine spots, or drag the text on the preview.
Set when it shows #
- On the Text lane, drag the block’s left or right edge to set when the text appears and disappears.
- Drag the middle of the block to move it to another moment.
- Press Esc when you’re done.
- To remove text, select its block and press Delete, or click Delete in the inspector.

Intro and outro cards on every recording #
Want the same opening and closing card each time? In Settings → Brand, turn on an intro or outro title card. It’s added to every new recording, in your first brand color and your font. You can still edit it on the Text lane. Details in Your brand.
For words that follow your voice, use captions instead of text blocks.
Shortcuts on this page#
| Keys | What it does |
|---|---|
| T | Add a title at the playhead |
| Delete | Delete the selected text |
| Esc | Deselect |
| CmdZ | Undo |
If something’s off#
- There’s no Position section
- You picked Title card, which always fills the screen. Pick another kind to place it.
- My brand font isn’t in the list
- The Brand tile only shows when that font is installed on this Mac.
- The text shows for too short a time
- Drag the right edge of its block on the Text lane to make it longer.
