How the ScreenCameo license works #

  • It’s a one-time purchase at the price on the pricing page. It isn’t a subscription, and nothing renews by itself.
  • One license lets one person use ScreenCameo on up to 3 Macs that they use, for personal and commercial work.
  • Every update released in the 12 months after you buy is included. The versions you have keep working with no time limit, on the macOS versions they support.
  • Your key is one long line that starts with L1.. It’s checked on your Mac, so activating works even when you’re offline.
  • ScreenCameo doesn’t track your Macs online, so there’s no account or devices list to manage. Just remove the license from a Mac you stop using.

Activate ScreenCameo with your license key #

Your key appears on the page right after you pay, and it’s emailed to you with the subject “Your ScreenCameo license key”. Install ScreenCameo first (see install ScreenCameo), then use the link or paste the key.

With the activation link

  1. Click Activate in ScreenCameo in the email, or on the page you saw after paying.
  2. If your browser asks, allow it to open ScreenCameo.
  3. ScreenCameo shows “Licensed to” with your email. You’re ready to record.

By pasting the key

  1. Copy the whole key from your purchase email. Line breaks, spaces or quotes your mail app adds are fine.
  2. Open the activation step: on first launch it’s the Activate your license step of the Welcome window. Later, click the menu-bar icon → Activate License…, or open Settings (CmdComma) → License.
  3. Paste the key into the field and click Activate.

See your license in Settings #

Open Settings (CmdComma) and click License in the sidebar. When ScreenCameo is activated, it shows:

RowWhat it shows
Licensed toYour name, or your email if no name was given
EmailThe email you bought with. Shown when the license also has a name.
License IDA short id for your license. Quote it when you contact support; it’s safe to share, unlike the key.
Updates included untilThe end of your 12 months of updates

Below are Use a Different License Key… and Remove License from This Mac…, plus links to Lost your key? and Buy a license.

Move your license to a new Mac #

  1. On the old Mac, open Settings → License and click Remove License from This Mac….
  2. Click Remove License to confirm. You can activate it again with the same key at any time.
  3. On the new Mac, install ScreenCameo and activate it with the same key.

Find a lost license key #

  1. Search your inbox for “Your ScreenCameo license key”, sent from hello@screencameo.com. Check your spam or junk folder too.
  2. Still missing? Open Recover your license key. Enter the email you paid with and the Transaction ID from your PayPal receipt (an order ID works too).
  3. If they match a purchase, we email the same key again, to the address you used at checkout. It can take a few minutes.

You can also email support from the address you bought with, and we’ll send it again. In the app, Lost your key? in Settings → License opens the same recovery page.

Renew updates after 12 months #

Every update released in the 12 months after you buy is included. After that, the versions you already have keep working, with no time limit. Newer versions need Renew updates.

  • ScreenCameo only offers updates released while your license includes them. Settings → License shows the date under Updates included until.
  • If you install a version released after that date, ScreenCameo says “Your license includes updates until …, and this version was released after that.” That version won’t record, edit or export until you renew. Reinstall an earlier version to keep working without renewing.
  1. Click Renew updates in Settings → License, or in that message.
  2. The buy page opens with a note about the license you’re renewing. Buying gives you a new key with 12 months of updates from that day.
  3. Activate the new key in Settings → License with Use a Different License Key…, or click the link in its email.

Get a refund within 30 days #

  1. Email support within 30 days of buying.
  2. Send it from the address you bought with, or include your PayPal Transaction ID. A reason helps, but you don’t have to give one.
  3. You get the full price back, to the payment method you used. How fast it shows up depends on your bank or PayPal; it usually takes a few business days.

The full terms are in the refund policy.

Find your receipt and PayPal Transaction ID #

You get two emails when you buy:

EmailFromWhat’s in it
PayPal’s receiptPayPalThe amount paid and the Transaction ID. This is your proof of purchase.
“Your ScreenCameo license key”hello@screencameo.comYour license key, the Activate in ScreenCameo link, your License ID, the PayPal order ID and the Transaction ID

Can’t find the receipt? Log in to PayPal, open Activity and click the ScreenCameo payment: the Transaction ID is in its details. The license email has it too.

Changed your email address #

Recovery always sends your key to the email you bought with. If you can no longer use that address, email support from your new one. Include the old address and your PayPal Transaction ID, and we’ll help.

License messages and what they mean #

Recording, editing and exporting need a valid license. Without one, Home still opens, and you can still find, rename or delete your recordings. Here is what each message means:

MessageWhat it meansWhat to do
“Not activated yet. Paste the key from your purchase email.”There’s no key on this Mac.Paste your key and click Activate.
Incomplete license keyPart of the key is missing.Copy the whole key from your purchase email. It starts with L1.
Not a ScreenCameo license keyThe key isn’t ours, or it was made for a test version.Copy the key from your ScreenCameo purchase email.
License key not validPart of the key was changed or cut off.Copy it again from your purchase email.
Newer version neededThe key needs a newer ScreenCameo.Download the latest version from the download page.
License turned offThe license was refunded, or the key was shared publicly.Think it’s a mistake? Contact support.
License expiredSome keys, such as beta keys, have an end date.Buy a license to keep using ScreenCameo.
License not savedThe key is valid but couldn’t be saved to your Keychain.Unlock the Keychain and try again.
“Your license includes updates until …, and this version was released after that.”This version came out after your updates ended.Click Renew updates, or reinstall a version from before that date. See renew updates.
“Replace the license on this Mac?”An activation link for a different license was opened.Click Keep Current License unless you opened the link yourself.
“Couldn’t activate ScreenCameo: …”An activation link didn’t work. The rest of the message says why.Follow the button in the message, or paste the key instead.

If a license stops being valid while ScreenCameo is open, you see a short notice, such as “Your license was turned off”, “Your license has expired”, “This version isn’t covered by your license” or “Your license was removed”. A recording in progress carries on and is saved. Open projects are saved and closed. Click Details to open Settings → License.

What the license check sends #

Your key is checked on your Mac. ScreenCameo contacts screencameo.com to check for updates and to download the list of refunded license IDs, and GitHub to download an update you install. The first time you make captions in a language, macOS may download that language from Apple. There’s no account and no analytics.

  • The refunded-key list holds only license ids, reasons and dates. It never includes names, emails or PayPal details.
  • A Mac that stays offline keeps the last list it downloaded.
  • Settings → Privacy shows the same summary in the app. The full details are in the privacy policy.
