Record yourself over a video

Record a voiceover and webcam over a video after you’ve edited it, with a script, takes you can redo, or a video from your phone.

Where in the app Editor → Insert → Record Yourself… Editor → Audio tab → Voiceover & presenter Cmd5 Command Palette → “voiceover” CmdK

You can record a voiceover and webcam over a video once your screen recording is edited. Watch the finished video and talk over it. Your camera shows in the bubble, and your voice plays over the recording. Every try is a take, so you can redo any part.

The bubble uses every layout, framing and background option on the camera page. Your voice mixes with the rest of the audio.

1. Record a voiceover and webcam over your video #

  1. In the editor, choose Insert → Record Yourself…. Or press CmdK and type “voiceover”. The Audio tab’s Voiceover & presenter section has the same button.
  2. Under Camera, pick your camera. Choose None (voice only) for a voiceover without your face.
  3. Under Microphone, pick your microphone.
  4. Under Record over, choose Whole video, From the playhead or Marked range.
  5. Keep Play the video’s sound quietly on to hear the video while you talk. Turn it off to watch in silence.
  6. Click Record. After a 3-2-1 countdown, the video plays from the start of the range while your camera and microphone record.
  7. It stops by itself at the end of the range. Press Esc or Space, or click Stop, to stop sooner.

Need a moment? Click the pause button. The video and the script stop, and carry on in sync. If camera or microphone access is off, the window says which one. Click Open System Settings, turn on ScreenCameo, then come back. See permissions.

2. Use a script #

A script scrolls in a panel at the top of the screen while you record. The panel is never in the video.

  1. Type or paste your script in the Script box of the Record Yourself window.
  2. Or click Import .txt… to load a text file, or Start from the transcript to begin from your captions’ words.
  3. Keep Show while recording ticked.
  4. Pick a Size from 18 to 40 pt, and a Scroll speed: Off, Slow, Medium or Fast.

3. Pick the best take #

Every recording is a new take, and nothing is thrown away. Your takes are listed under Your takes in the Record Yourself window, and in the Audio tab under Voiceover & presenter.

StatusWhat it means
In useThe whole take plays.
Partly in useA newer take covers part of it.
Not usedNewer takes cover all of it.
OffYou turned it off from its ⋯ menu.
  1. To redo a sentence, mark that part on the timeline and record again over Marked range. Only that part is replaced.
  2. Prefer an older take? Click it and choose Use This Take.
  3. Play plays the video from where the take starts. Preview plays the take on its own.
  4. Rename, turn off or delete a take from its ⋯ menu. CmdZ undoes any of these.

4. Add a camera video from your phone #

Filmed yourself on an iPhone or a camera while you recorded your screen? Add that video as a take instead.

  1. Choose Insert → Add Camera Video from File…, or click Add Camera Video… in the Audio tab. Pick the video.
  2. It becomes a take that follows your recording. When you cut silences or speed up a part, your face is cut and sped up with it.
  3. If both have sound, ScreenCameo lines the video up with your recording by matching their sound. Click Sync by Sound to do it again.
  4. Its own sound is off when your recording has a microphone. Turn on Use its sound to use the phone’s audio instead.

Line it up #

  1. Click a take in the Audio tab.
  2. Next to Line up, click − or + to move its picture and voice one frame earlier or later.
  3. Click Start at Playhead to place a camera video from the playhead instead. That’s useful for a project made from videos.

Set the voiceover volume #

  1. In the Audio tab under Voiceover & presenter, drag Voiceover volume to set how loud the takes are.
  2. Under Your recorded microphone under it, choose Lower (the default, 20 dB quieter wherever a take’s voice plays), Mute or Keep.
  3. Background music dips under the voiceover too, when Lower while I talk is on. See add music.
