Where screen recordings go on your Mac

Where screen recordings go on your Mac with ScreenCameo, plus exports, projects and screenshots, and how to move or back them up.

Where in the app Settings → General → Recordings folder CmdComma Home → Recordings Cmd0

Wondering where screen recordings go on Mac? ScreenCameo saves every recording in one folder, ~/Movies/ScreenCameo, with its exports in a folder inside. Screenshots are kept in a separate history. Nothing is uploaded, so all of it stays on your Mac.

Where your recordings are saved #

WhatWhere
Recordings (projects)~/Movies/ScreenCameo, the ScreenCameo folder in your Movies folder
Exported videos~/Movies/ScreenCameo/Exports
Screenshot history~/Library/Application Support/ScreenCameo/Screenshots
Saved screenshotsYour Desktop, unless you chose another folder
  1. Open Home with Cmd0 and click Recordings in the sidebar.
  2. Right-click a recording and choose Show in Finder. Finder opens with it selected.

Change the recordings folder #

You can keep recordings anywhere, such as on an external drive.

  1. Press CmdComma to open Settings, then click General.
  2. Under Library, find Recordings folder. Show opens the current folder in Finder.
  3. Click Change…, pick a folder, then click Use This Folder.
  4. To go back to ~/Movies/ScreenCameo, click Use Standard.

Find your exported videos #

Every export goes into the Exports folder inside your recordings folder. It’s named after the recording. Export again and the new file is numbered, like Demo 2.mp4 and Demo 3.mp4, so nothing is ever overwritten. Export covers the export options.

ScreenCameo project files #

Each recording is one .screencameo file. It’s a package that holds the original screen, camera and sound, your cursor movements and every edit. Your edits never change the original footage.

FileWhat it is
.screencameoA ScreenCameo project. Double-click it in Finder to open it in the editor.
.glintreelA project from before the app was renamed. It still opens, and ScreenCameo never renames it.

Name and organize recordings #

A new recording is named with the date and time, like Recording 2026-10-20 at 14.05.33. In Home → Recordings, right-click a recording for these:

ChoiceWhat it does
OpenOpens it in the editor.
Rename…Gives it a new name. Close it in the editor first.
DuplicateMakes a full copy named like “Demo copy”, so you can try edits on it.
Show in FinderShows the project file in Finder.
Move to Trash…Moves the project to the Trash after you confirm.

Where screenshots are saved #

Every screenshot you take goes into your screenshot history, in ~/Library/Application Support/ScreenCameo/Screenshots. Home → Screenshots shows them all. A screenshot only becomes a normal image file when you save it.

  1. Click Save in a screenshot’s thumbnail or editor. It goes to your Desktop.
  2. To pick another folder, open Settings → Screenshots and click Choose… next to Save to.
  3. Choose a Format there too. PNG is the default.

Saved files are named from the File name pattern. It starts as {app} {date} at {time}, which gives ScreenCameo 2026-10-20 at 14.05.33.png. Build your own from these words:

WordBecomes
{app}ScreenCameo
{date}The date you save, like 2026-10-20
{time}The time you save, like 14.05.33
{title}Screenshot, or the app’s name for a window capture
{n}1

If a file with that name exists, the new one gets a number at the end, like ScreenCameo 2026-10-20 at 14.05.33 2.png. Screenshots covers taking and annotating them.

Back up or move to a new Mac #

  1. Quit ScreenCameo with the menu-bar icon’s Quit ScreenCameo.
  2. Copy your recordings folder, ~/Movies/ScreenCameo, to a drive or your new Mac. Exports come with it.
  3. Want your screenshot history too? Copy ~/Library/Application Support/ScreenCameo as well.
  4. On the new Mac, install ScreenCameo and put the folders in the same places.
  5. Activate with the same key. See Move to a new Mac.

Recover an interrupted recording #

ScreenCameo saves a recording as it goes. If your Mac loses power or the app quits mid-recording, nothing is lost but the last couple of seconds.

The next time ScreenCameo opens, it says Recovered 1 recording (or however many). With an active license, each one opens in the editor. They’re saved in your recordings folder like any other. Recording has more on stopping and recovery.

If something’s off#

My old recordings disappeared from Home
You probably changed the Recordings folder. Click Use Standard in Settings → General, or move them into the new folder in Finder.
I can’t find my exported video
Open ~/Movies/ScreenCameo/Exports, or the Exports folder inside the recordings folder you chose.
Rename… won’t rename a recording
Close it in the editor first. Names can’t start with a dot, and two recordings can’t share a name.
